In 1926, the French company Sociedad Agrícola Minera “la Alpujarra” was so impressed by the amount of gold in its sands that it obtained water rights to wash the sand. An engineer built canals, and settled in this house, but with the Civil War he fled, and the company ceased its activity.
This company acquired the mining rights to four mining exploitation areas, under the names of: Muley Hacen, Zoraya, Cypango, Boabdil, along with water rights for washing these gold alluviums.
The Ugíjar deposits are located directly in a first generation conglomerate of Miocene age. The edges of the conglomerates are made of metamorphic rocks, coming from the “Mulhacen Mantle”.
The published gold content data is very disparate. The most recent ones (ENADIMSA, 1987) assign an extremely low grade (50 milligrams of gold per ton).
The Ruina Montium method was going to be put into practice as an exploitation system by the Alpujarreña Mining Society, for which it built canals that are still visible in the royal area. This system consisted of breaking down the gold-bearing hills by injecting water into them, causing large landslides.
The “Sociedad Minera Agrícola La Alpujarra” was created on September 13, 1926 in the city of San Sebastián. It received the mines as a contribution from the “Sociedad Estudios y Obtación de Concesiones de Minas S.A.”, which was the owner, at that time, of a good part of the deposits in the area. This company proposed the construction of an artificial lake near Ugíjar, to be able to extract the mineral with machines.
